A dark comic about villains is nothing new

Entertainment Weekly previewed samples of an anthology by a company called Vertoscope that boasts an already old vision:
Vertoscope’s goal is to tell the stories that often don’t get highlighted — the ones that are darker and more sinister — and editors and comic artists Nechama Frier and Ten Van Winkle have done just that by assembling a team of 22 creators including Meg Gandy (Godsend), Sarah Winifred Searle (Fresh Romance, Smut Peddler), Jenn Doyle (Knights Errant), Hannah Krieger (Camodad), and more. The anthology features 200 pages of original black-and-white psychological shorts in stories that focus on the theme “antagonist as protagonist.”
That is nothing new. Darkness has taken over much of comicdom for over a quarter century. It's practically become a norm in superhero comics, and spotlights on villains has been close behind too. There have even been stories sympathetic to the villain. Green Lantern's notable archnemesis Sinestro practically became the hero at one point a few years ago when the New 52 first began. And if this new anthology sides with the villains, it's not something that any sane person ought to support.

About me

  • I'm Avi Green
  • From Jerusalem, Israel
  • I was born in Pennsylvania in 1974, and moved to Israel in 1983. I also enjoyed reading a lot of comics when I was young, the first being Fantastic Four. I maintain a strong belief in the public's right to knowledge and accuracy in facts. I like to think of myself as a conservative-style version of Clark Kent. I don't expect to be perfect at the job, but I do my best.
